How to test a full size keyboard

Four blocks, worked in order, so no key is skipped.

  1. Clear the function row

    Start at Esc and move right through F1 to F12, then Print Screen, Scroll Lock and Pause. Screen-capture software claims Print Screen on many systems, so close it first if that key refuses to light.

  2. Work the alphanumeric block

    Number row, then the three letter rows, then the bottom row. Press both Shift keys, both Ctrl keys, both Alt keys, both Windows keys and the Menu key between right Alt and right Ctrl — each sends a separate code and each counts.

  3. Finish with navigation and the pad

    Insert, Home, Page Up, Delete, End, Page Down, then all four arrows. Move to the number pad last and press Num Lock itself, which is a key like any other.

What counts as a full size keyboard

Full size — also written 100% — means the board carries the complete layout that has been standard since the mid-1980s: a function row, the main alphanumeric block, a navigation cluster with the arrow keys and the six-key Insert/Home/Page Up group, and a 17-key number pad on the right.

On a US ANSI board that comes to 104 keys. European ISO boards come to 105, because ISO shortens the left Shift to add an extra key beside it and turns the wide flat Enter into a tall notched one. If your board has 105 keys and a tall Enter, switch the Key Layout dropdown to QWERTZ or AZERTY and the on-screen board changes shape to match.

Gaming and productivity boards often add a volume wheel, dedicated macro keys or media buttons on top of that. Those extras are handled inside the keyboard's own firmware and usually send no standard key code, so they will not light anything up here. That is the keyboard working as designed, not a fault.

How to test all 104 keys

Work in blocks rather than at random. The score only reaches 100% when nothing is missed, and it is easy to skip a key you never consciously use.

Start with the function row, left to right: Esc, F1 through F12, then Print Screen, Scroll Lock and Pause. Move down through the number row, then the three letter rows, then the bottom row including both Ctrl keys, both Alt keys, both Windows keys and the Menu key. Finish with the navigation cluster and then the number pad — and remember to press Num Lock itself, which is a key like any other.

The keys people most often forget are Scroll Lock, Pause, the right Windows key, the Menu key between right Alt and right Ctrl, and the number pad's own Enter. All five are real, testable keys and all five count toward the total.

What a dead key actually means

If a key does not turn green, the fault sits somewhere along a short chain: the switch under the cap, the contact pad or membrane beneath it, the controller inside the keyboard, the cable or wireless link, or the driver in your operating system.

Test the same key on a second computer before concluding the keyboard is broken. A key that fails on one machine and works on another points at software — a stuck modifier, a remapping tool, a language layout, or an application grabbing the key before the browser sees it. A key that fails everywhere points at hardware.

One deliberate exception: this page reads key events, so a physically working key can still fail to register when another program has claimed it globally. Screen-capture tools commonly claim Print Screen, and macro software commonly claims the function row.

Clean it before you replace it

A surprising share of dead keys on a full-size board are mechanical rather than electrical. Debris under a cap, a spilled drink that has dried into a contact, or a keycap seated slightly crooked will each produce a key that feels normal and reports nothing.

On a mechanical board, pull the cap with a keycap puller and look at the switch. On a membrane board, turn it upside down and give it a firm shake before anything more invasive. Compressed air aimed across the switch rather than down into it clears crumbs without driving them deeper.

If a key works intermittently — green on some presses, nothing on others — that usually means a failing switch or a dirty contact rather than a controller fault. On a hot-swap mechanical board, that is a two-minute repair.

Fixing a full size keyboard

Four faults specific to boards this size.

The number pad types nothing

On the test:Pad keys light green on the board, but no digits appear.

  1. Press Num Lock once and watch the indicator light on the keyboard.
  2. Check the pad keys still report here — Numpad4 lighting up means the hardware is fine.
  3. Turn off Mouse Keys in your accessibility settings, which hijacks the pad on both Windows and macOS.
  4. Restart the application. Some remote-desktop and virtual-machine clients swallow the pad.
Print Screen never registers

On the test:Every other function-row key lights, PrintScreen stays blank.

  1. Close screen-capture tools, which register Print Screen as a global hotkey before the browser sees it.
  2. Check your clipboard after pressing it. A captured image means the key works and something else claimed it.
  3. Try Shift plus Print Screen, which some capture tools do not intercept.
The spacebar misses at one end

On the test:The spacebar lights on a centre press but not on an edge press.

  1. Press the spacebar at the centre, then 20 mm from each end, and note which fail.
  2. Remove the keycap and check the stabiliser wire is clipped into both housings.
  3. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the stabiliser wire ends.
  4. Reseat the cap by pressing straight down over the switch stem, not at an angle.
Several keys in one row fail together

On the test:Neighbouring keys go blank in a straight line.

  1. Note the pattern. A straight row or column points at a shared matrix trace, not at several dead switches.
  2. Reseat the internal ribbon cable between the daughterboard and the controller.
  3. Try a different USB port and cable to rule out the connection.
  4. Treat a whole-side failure as a controller fault, which is rarely worth repairing.

Frequently asked questions

How many keys should a full size keyboard have?
104 on a US ANSI board and 105 on a European ISO board. The extra ISO key sits beside a shortened left Shift, and ISO also uses a tall two-row Enter instead of the wide flat one. Both counts exclude Fn, which full-size boards usually do not have at all.
Why is my number pad not typing numbers?
Num Lock is off. The pad still reports to this tester either way — Numpad7 reports as Numpad7 whether Num Lock is on or off — but with Num Lock off your operating system treats those keys as Home, End and the arrows instead of digits. Press Num Lock once and try again.
Do the F13 to F24 keys work?
Standard full-size boards stop at F12, so this layout draws no F13 and above. Some Apple and specialist boards do carry them; the Magic Keyboard test includes F13 to F19.
My volume wheel does nothing on this test. Is it broken?
Almost certainly not. Volume wheels, RGB buttons and dedicated macro keys are handled inside the keyboard firmware and send either nothing at all or a vendor-specific code that browsers do not expose. Test those against your system volume instead.
Can I reach 100% on this test?
Yes. Every key drawn on a full-size board can be reported by a browser, so a working keyboard reaches 100%. That is not true of every layout — compact and laptop boards draw an Fn key that no browser can ever see, and it is excluded from their totals for exactly that reason.
