How to test a 75% keyboard

The crowded right edge deserves most of your attention.

  1. Function row first

    Esc through F12, then the extra keys your manufacturer placed at the end of that row — commonly Print Screen, Delete and Insert. Those three vary between makers more than any other part of the layout.

  2. Alphanumeric block

    Number row, letter rows, then the bottom row. The right Shift is shortened to make room for the up arrow, so press it deliberately at its centre.

  3. The right-hand column and arrows

    Work down the navigation column, then press all four arrows. Watch which cap lights rather than assuming the one under your finger is the one that fired — the keys are narrow and tightly packed here.

What a 75% keyboard gives up

Compared with a tenkeyless board, a 75% loses the gaps. On a TKL the function row sits above an 8 mm break, the navigation cluster is a separate six-key island, and the arrows have clear space around them. On a 75% all of that is squeezed into one continuous slab about 20 mm narrower.

The navigation keys survive, but only some of them and only in a single column running down the right edge: typically Print Screen, Delete and Insert on the function row, then Page Up, Page Down, Home and End stacked down the side. The arrow keys tuck under the right Shift, which is shortened to make room.

Everything else — Scroll Lock, Pause, the Menu key, the right Windows key — moves onto the Fn layer or disappears entirely. That is the trade, and this test counts 83 keys because those are the 83 that physically exist.

The Fn key will never light up

Every 75% board has an Fn key, and it will stay greyed out on this test no matter how hard you press it. That is correct behaviour, not a fault.

Fn is handled by the microcontroller inside the keyboard. When you hold it, the controller changes what the other keys report — Fn plus F5 might send Print Screen — but Fn itself never becomes a key event and never reaches your browser. There is no way for any web page to see it.

For that reason Fn is drawn on the board with a dashed outline and excluded from the totals. A working 75% board therefore reaches 100% on 83 keys, with the 84th physical key sitting there permanently untestable.

Testing the crowded right edge

The right-hand column is where 75% boards go wrong, because the keys are narrow, tightly packed and easy to mis-hit. Press each one deliberately and watch which key on screen lights up, rather than assuming the one under your finger is the one that fired.

A neighbouring key lighting up consistently means the keycap is catching on its neighbour, or the switch is seated at an angle. On a hot-swap board, pull both caps and reseat them before assuming a switch has failed.

The arrow cluster under the right Shift deserves the same attention. On many 75% boards the up arrow sits directly beside a shortened right Shift, and a slightly wide Shift cap will physically block it.

Is 75% the right size for you?

If you use the function row for anything — debugging with F5 and F12, renaming with F2, alt-tabbing between quick-slots in games — a 75% keeps that and a 65% does not. That single difference is the whole reason the layout exists.

If you also need Home, End, Page Up and Page Down for editing text or code, a 75% keeps those as dedicated keys, though in a column rather than a block. A 65% keeps only some, and a 60% keeps none.

What you give up is spacing. A 75% board takes a few days to stop mis-hitting, because keys that used to have gaps around them now touch. Test yours here before deciding whether the misses are you or the board.

The wrong key lights when I press one

On the test:A neighbouring cap turns green instead of the one you pressed.

  1. Press the key at its exact centre and check which cap lights.
  2. Remove both keycaps and check each is seated square on its stem.
  3. Look for a switch installed at an angle, which tilts the cap into its neighbour.
  4. Reseat and retest before concluding a switch has failed.
The up arrow does not respond

On the test:Left, down and right arrows light; up stays blank.

  1. Check the right Shift cap is not overhanging the up arrow.
  2. Press the up arrow at its front edge, away from the Shift key.
  3. Swap the up arrow switch with one from a key you never use, on a hot-swap board.

  1. Expect this. The right-hand column of a 75% is the least standardised part of any layout.
  2. Press the key and watch which on-screen cap lights — the code is what matters, not the position.
