Work the function row and alphanumeric block
Esc through F12, then the number row and three letter rows. On a 17-inch chassis these keys sit at full desktop pitch, so mis-hits are rare.

Take the right-hand navigation column
Home, Page Up, Page Down and End fold into a column beside the letters rather than sitting in a separate island. Press each deliberately.

Finish with the number pad
Unlike a 15.6-inch board, the pad here is full width. Press Num Lock itself, then work the digits, operators and the pad's own Enter, which sends a different code from the main Enter.

Num Lock state
The pad reports its codes whether Num Lock is on or off. If digits are not typing, Num Lock is off — the keys are fine.

Why a 17-inch laptop fits a full-width pad
A 17.3-inch chassis is roughly 400 mm wide. The alphanumeric block claims about 290 mm of that, leaving enough for a 17-key pad at close to desktop width.
A 15.6-inch chassis carries the same 100 keys but has around 60 mm less to work with, so makers narrow the pad column instead of dropping keys. This page draws that difference: the 15.6-inch layout uses a squeezed pad column, the 17.3-inch one does not.

Larger keys, not more keys
The extra chassis width on a 17-inch laptop buys key size rather than key count. Both sizes carry 100 testable keys; the 17-inch board simply draws them larger, at a pitch close to a desktop keyboard.
For anyone moving between a desktop and a large laptop, that matching pitch is the practical benefit — typing muscle memory transfers without adjustment.

Testing a gaming laptop
Most 17.3-inch laptops sold today are gaming or workstation machines, which means the keyboard sees heavy use on a small number of keys. Test WASD, both Shift keys, Space and Ctrl individually, then hold them together to check rollover.
Laptop keyboards rarely offer N-key rollover. A board that drops the fourth simultaneous key is normal for the class, and worth knowing before blaming a game.

Note the pattern. A line means a shared matrix trace, not several dead switches.
Treat a spill as the likely cause if one happened, since damage follows those traces.
