How to test a 60% keyboard

Only 60 keys report, so a full pass takes under a minute.

  1. Number row, starting at Esc

    The top-left key is Esc, not backquote. Work right along the row to Backspace.

  2. The three letter rows

    Tab through Backslash, then Caps Lock through Enter, then Shift through Shift. Press both Shift keys — they send different codes.

  3. The bottom row, carefully

    This row varies between manufacturers more than any other row on any layout. Some boards carry a right Windows key, some a second Fn, some neither. A key on your board with no counterpart on screen is a layout difference, not a fault.

What a 60% keyboard actually has

Sixty-one physical keys: the number row, the three letter rows, and a bottom row of modifiers. Esc occupies the top-left position where backtick sits on a full-size board. There is no function row, no Insert or Delete cluster, no Home or End, and no arrow keys.

Sixty of those keys are testable in a browser. The sixty-first is Fn, which the keyboard handles internally and never sends, so it is drawn with a dashed outline here and excluded from the totals. A working 60% board reaches 100% on sixty keys.

Everything else lives on the Fn layer. The arrows are usually Fn with I, J, K and L, or Fn with the right-hand cluster of punctuation keys, depending on the manufacturer. F1 to F12 are Fn plus the number row. Delete is commonly Fn plus Backspace.

Why the Fn layer is invisible to this test

When you hold Fn and press the semicolon key to get an up arrow, your keyboard does not send Fn and semicolon. Its controller intercepts the combination and sends the arrow key code instead — a single, ordinary key event that your computer cannot distinguish from a real arrow key.

That means the Fn layer works perfectly well; it just does not show up as extra keys on this board, because from your browser's point of view no extra keys were pressed. If you hold Fn and press semicolon while a full-size layout is selected, the up arrow lights up there, which is a neat way to confirm your Fn layer is working at all.

It also means Fn itself can never be tested by any website. No browser API exposes it. Any keyboard tester that claims to test Fn is either testing a different key or lying.

Testing every key on a 60%

There are only sixty to get through, so a systematic pass takes under a minute. Start top-left at Esc, run along the number row to Backspace, then Tab through Backslash, then Caps Lock through Enter, then Shift through Shift.

Finish with the bottom row, and pay attention there: it holds both Ctrl keys, both Alt keys, one or two Windows keys, Fn and the space bar, and the arrangement varies between manufacturers more than any other row on any other layout. Some boards have a right Windows key, some have a second Fn, some have neither.

If a bottom-row key on your board has no counterpart on screen, that is a layout difference rather than a fault. Check what the on-screen board expects and press the key in that position.

Who a 60% is actually for

People who type prose, people with very little desk, and people who care about carrying a keyboard. For those uses the missing keys genuinely do not come up often enough to matter.

It is a harder sell for spreadsheets, code editing and anything that leans on arrow keys for navigation, because holding Fn to move a cursor is meaningfully slower than reaching for a dedicated key. If you find yourself remapping half the board within a week, a 65% was probably the right buy.

For gaming it depends entirely on the genre. Games that bind WASD and a handful of number keys are unaffected. Games that use the function row for quick-slots will need remapping in-game rather than on the keyboard.

I cannot find the arrow keys

  2. Hold Fn and try the I, J, K and L cluster, or the right-hand punctuation keys — makers differ.
